Community Appreciation Day

Workshops "Mental Health & more"

Crowns & Cuts® Hair Care Event

Our Community Appreciation Day is a free, family-friendly event created to bring children, families, local organizations, and community members together for a meaningful day of connection, learning, and fun.

Throughout the event, young people participate in sports-based skills challenges, team-building exercises, family activities, and interactive mini workshops. These experiences encourage confidence, communication, leadership, healthy competition, and cooperation while giving participants opportunities to earn prizes and recognition for their effort, growth, and achievements.

Community Appreciation Day also introduces youth and families to Mental Mentors Org’s Fundamental Keys—fitness, nutrition, financial literacy, and lifelong learning—and demonstrates how these areas collectively support mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

More than a day of activities, this event creates a welcoming environment where young people feel supported, families build connections, and community partners come together to invest in brighter futures.

Through encouragement, positive experiences, and access to helpful resources, we reinforce the power of community and remind every child that their potential deserves to be recognized and celebrated.

Workshops "Mental Health & more"

Crowns & Cuts® Hair Care Event

Since 2019, our Crowns & Cuts® Youth Hair Care Event has provided hundreds of children in foster care and other underserved youth with a day filled with fun, empowerment, and self-care. The event creates a welcoming space where children can feel seen, valued, celebrated, and supported by their community.

Youth receive free professional haircuts, hairstyling, and grooming services that help reinforce confidence, dignity, and positive self-image. Hair care is deeply connected to cultural identity, and for children in care, having that identity recognized and affirmed can play an important role in strengthening self-esteem and a sense of belonging.

Crowns & Cuts® also equips parents and caregivers with practical education on proper hair and skin care. This guidance gives caregivers the knowledge, tools, and confidence to continue healthy care routines at home while supporting the unique cultural and personal needs of the children they serve.

While the event places a meaningful focus on the hair care needs and experiences of African American foster youth, Crowns & Cuts® has always remained inclusive—welcoming children of different ethnicities, backgrounds, and circumstances who are in need of care, encouragement, and celebration.

Beyond hair care, the event brings children and families together for an uplifting community experience featuring activities such as game trucks, balloon artists, face painting, music, food and refreshments, and swag and merchandise giveaways.

Through Crowns & Cuts®, we provide more than a haircut or hairstyle. We create an experience that celebrates identity, supports caregivers, builds confidence, and reminds every child that they are worthy of care, joy, and community.

Workshops "Mental Health & more"

Our Mental Health & More workshop series provides youth and families with engaging, in-depth sessions centered on Mental Mentors Org’s Fundamental Keys—fitness, nutrition, financial literacy, and lifelong learning.

Through interactive lessons, hands-on activities, and meaningful discussions, participants explore how these areas work together to support mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

The workshops are also designed to create a welcoming space where participants feel seen, heard, respected, and supported. We encourage young people to express themselves openly, ask questions, share their experiences, and build healthy connections without fear of judgment.

While emotional openness is sometimes described as vulnerability or weakness, we view it as a source of courage, strength, and empowerment. By helping remove the stigma surrounding honest conversations about emotions and mental health, our workshops reinforce that speaking up, seeking support, and being emotionally available are powerful steps toward personal growth.

Through practical knowledge, supportive conversations, and positive experiences, participants gain foundational tools that can help them make informed decisions, develop confidence, navigate challenges, and lead healthier, more balanced lives—paving the way for brighter futures.

Expanding Our Care-Centered Work

Mental Mentors Org continues to expand its care-centered work through healing experiences that respond to the needs of families in our community. Crowns and Cuts® presents Love Lives Here was created to honor siblings and families impacted by gun violence through self-care, community, and healing. By creating spaces where remembrance, support, dignity, and connection can exist together, we continue our commitment to serving children, families, and communities with compassion and purpose.
